The British Association for Islamic Studies is seeking an expression of interest in the role of Coordinator for the BRAIS Prize in the Study of Islam and the Muslim World.

No formal qualifications are required, but the role would be suitable for a doctoral student at an advanced stage of study or an early career scholar. It would offer the appointee the opportunity to become actively involved with BRAIS, to serve the promotion of outstanding scholarship in the field, to work closely with the Prize Committee, and to gain professional experience. The appointment will be for an initial term of one calendar year, with an expectation to extend to three or four years. A modest annual honorarium of £300 will be provided.

The appointee must be a current BRAIS member and have the following personal qualifications:

  1. A responsible and discrete attitude in dealing with confidential information;
  2. Punctuality and efficiency;
  3. Excellent organisational skills;
  4. Excellent communication skills, especially in email correspondence;
  5. Experience in administrative work is preferred but not necessary.

The main duties of the Coordinator are as follows:

  1. To receive submissions and communicate with applicants throughout the process.
  2. To process the submissions (e.g. by preparing a spreadsheet and uploading them in an online folder) and, in co-ordination with the Chair (or Deputy Chair), to distribute them to Committee members.
  3. To communicate with reviewers on behalf of the Committee.
  4. To receive, process and circulate the reviewers’ reports, to the Committee.
  5. To organise Committee meetings (mostly online), and to take notes during meetings.
  6. To assist with the organisation of the award ceremony.
  7. To update the relevant web-page(s) on the BRAIS website in co-ordination with the BRAIS Web Officer.
  8. To monitor the email account of the Prize, and to respond to queries in co-ordination with the Chair.
